Rutgers University Scarlet Knight™ Cranberries


Invention Summary:

Scarlet Knight™ is a new and distinct variety of cranberry distinguished in that it is the result of crossing two varieties (Stevens and NJS98-37), produces high yields, higher anthocyanin (red pigment) content, lower titratable acidity, and larger fruit size. Additionally, the high TAcy values that are exhibited in September allow for an earlier harvest window for processed fruit, particularly compared to the primary commercial variety, ‘Stevens’.

Established test plots in NJ yielded an average of 214 barrels/acre, which is comparable to production numbers of the ‘Stevens’ variety. The fruit size averaged a length of 1.8 to 2.0 cm long by 1.5 to 1.7 cm wide, which provides a much more round shape than most commercial varieties. This nearly round shape of Scarlet Knight™ facilitates a more even sorting and packaging of the fruit. The fruit weight was also significantly more substantial than most commercial varieties, with an average of 2.4 grams per berry.
